A visit to Poland

Introduction

Imagine that your foreign friend is going to visit Poland. He has no idea what places and monuments are worth visiting. For this reason, he wants you to provide him with some information about interesting Polish cities or regions, their history and culture. This is a group activity, you will have four tasks to complete.

Task

► Task 1

In groups of 3, you have to choose a city or a region of Poland that you find interesting and worth visiting. Make sure that each group chooses a different place.

► Task 2

You need to know how to attract a potential tourist to a place you have chosen. Find some information about the culture of the place, activities one may do there, cultural events, festivals and so on. For example, if the place you have chosen is Cracow, you can write about International Street Theatre Festival, the Grand Dragon Parade etc.

►Task 3

Now it's time to think about history of the city/region. Has it got any interesting monuments? Where would you advise your friend to go and what to see? Why? Or maybe you think that some places are overrated? Briefly describe the history of the selected city/region and its monuments. Don't forget to find some pictures or short videos.

►Task 4

Prepare a PowerPoint presentation. You will present it in front of the classroom. Then, your classmates will vote for the best one.

Process

Step 1

You need to gather together and choose the subject of your presentation. Make sure that each group has got a different presentation's subject.

Step 2

The next step is to define your roles in the project.

There are three of you in each group, so one of you should be responsible for finding cultural information, the other one- for finding historical data and the third one of you ought to prepare the presentation and send it to me.

I want all of you to participate equally in the project!

Step 3

You are going to present the results of your project in front of the classroom.

Please, bear in mind that presenting is not reading.

Evaluation

Each group will receive a credit for that task.

You will be given points, based on accuracy of information and PowerPoint presentation.

In every field (history, culture, presentation) you can get maximum 5 points.

15 - 13 points: 5

13 - 11 points: 4

10 - 7 points: 3

6 - 4 points: 2

less than 4 points: 1

Moreover, your classmates will vote for the best, in their opinion, presentation.

If two or more presentations receive the same number of votes, then my vote will be decisive.

Members of the winning group get 6.

Conclusion

The main aim of the assignment was to learn useful and important vocabulary connected to history and culture of Poland, by promoting Polish cities and regions. What is more, you got a chance to learn something new about our beautiful country. Last, but not least, performing your presentations in front of the whole class was a good way to develop your self- confidence and to control your stage fright.
