Introduction
This lesson is designed for a Kindergarten classroom where the target language is English for a majority non-English speaking student group. This combines language and content as primary learning targets.
Aims:
To present ocean animal vocabulary in English
To introduce students to aquariums and what animals live there
To help students describe what they see in English
To make students aware of taking care of our surroundings (the ocean)
Learning Outcomes:
Students will be able to recognize and say key vocabulary: 7 underwater animals
Students will be able to distinguish between big and small
Students will be able to describe what they see using, "I see a.. " and use it appropriately
Students will learn about aquariums and what lives there
Students will be able to identify what belongs in the ocean and consider what it means to keep the ocean clean
Students will share and work in groups, classifying the animal vocabulary.
Blooms Taxonomy:
-
Remembering: Review topic of big and small, and keeping our space clean (relate to clean ocean theme)
-
Understanding: New vocabulary is introduced, "I see a..(animal)" phrase, peppa pig introduces the aquarium, clean ocean theme
-
Applying: students complete activities-recognizing, identifying, speaking (repeating) and matching new vocabulary
-
Analyzing: students reflect on clean ocean in class discussion and what animals/things belong in the ocean
-
Evaluating: evaluate recognition of different animals and being able to use language structure to identify during "my favorite animal" activities and sensory bin activity
-
Creating: students create an underwater scene displaying what a clean ocean looks like and with the ocean animals (using recycled or scrap materials in the classroom)
Florida State Standards: Kindergarten
Social Studies: Spaces, Places and environments
-
BtoK.4y-K.SS.4.6 Begins to identify the relationship between human decisions and the impact on the environment (e.g., recycling and water conservation)
-
BtoK.4y-K.SS.4.2 Identifies differences and similarities between own environment and other locations
Environment
-
EL.4y-K.VI.E.1 Demonstrates awareness of relationship to people, objects and living/non-living things in their environment
-
Benchmark a.
Demonstrates how people use objects and natural resources in the environment -
Benchmark b.
Participates in daily routines demonstrating basic conservation strategies (e.g., conserving water when washing hands or brushing teeth) -
Benchmark c.
Identifies examples of organized efforts to protect the environment (e.g., recycling materials in the classroom)
Creative Expression through the Arts
-
EL.4y-K.VIII.A.1
-
Combines with intention a variety of open-ended, process-oriented and diverse art materials
Task
This lesson is divided into two sessions for students to do at home in preparation for work they will do in the classroom to support their learning (like a flipped classroom model). At home they can complete these tasks with the help and support of a parent or guardian.
Session 1 Online:
1. Students will watch a simple songs video at home, play a matching game with ocean animals, and do a second activity with audio where they have to choose the correct animal. Next, students will complete a Kahoot quiz assessing their recognition of animal vocabulary.
Follow Up In Class Session:
-Students will practice using "I see a...." structure with games using the target vocabulary flashcards (I spy or find the animal).
Session 2 Online:
2. Students begin the online session with an episode to learn about aquariums. Students will then do the classifying animals by size activity. Students explore aquariums around the world and draw their favorite animal in the unit. Finally, students will complete a what belongs in ocean activity and finish with "A Whale's Tale" video with discussion points for parents.
Follow Up In Class Session:
-Students bring a drawing of their favorite underwater animal to share with the class after the assembly. (They say the name of the animal and the color). Students will classify the animals(as review)-matches, big and small, by color-while small groups start the next activity and they rotate.
-In groups of 3, students will get to play in a water sensory tub with ocean animals and objects that don't belong in the ocean. We will describe what we see (building on previous topics: colors, big + small, and recent structure "I see a...").
-We will watch the video of the whale cleaning up the garbage and talk about how they are sad when it is dirty and happy when it is all clean. After the video, we will sit in a circle and talk about how we can take care of the ocean (elicit clean up + recycling).
-Finally, students will make an underwater scene to decorate the classroom using recycled materials. Students will collaborate with classmates to make their favorite ocean animal and practice fine motor skills manipulating the materials (ex. tearing tissue paper, painting, beading string, forming clay) to cover their animals and ocean background.
Process
Parents with their kids follow the order of at home activities to complete the lesson:
Week 1 Activities:
1. Watch A Sailor Went to Sea: Super Simple Songs
2. Matching Game
https://wordwall.net/resource/44618533/ocean-friends-memory-match
As your child plays the memory match game, make use of the audio and have your child repeat the name of the animal.
Something we have worked on in class is: "Is it a match?" You can ask your child this question and have them respond with yes or no for each pair they select.
3. Choose the Correct Animal

4. Kahoot
Students (with your help reading the sentences) can complete the Kahoot by selecting the picture they think is correct.
Week 2 at Home Activities:
1. Peppa Pig Goes to the Aquarium Video
2. Big and Small Sea Animals Sorting Activity

3. Explore the live cameras of some aquariums around the world. Afterwards, have your child chose their favorite animal that they saw and draw a picture of it to bring to the class to share.

4. Complete the worksheet about what belongs in the ocean (animals, not trash)

5. Watch the video and talk to your child about what they see. We will continue the discussion and do activities in class related to the video.
Evaluation
Formative assessments: Matching game, listening activity, classifying animals, drawing picture assignment, what belongs in the ocean
exercise
Summative assessment: kahoot quiz to determine understanding of vocabulary, observational assessment during in classroom
activities-discussion about clean ocean, “I see” games and use, water table activity and interaction (use of target vocabulary)
Assessment Table
| Observations | with difficulty | In process | Achieved |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ex. Students know and can identify all 7 ocean animals |
Conclusion
In this Webquest students and their families were guided through a lesson on ocean animals, learning about aquariums, and learning about taking care of the ocean environment through building student awareness of what should not go in the ocean. They learned new vocabulary in the target language and an important lesson about taking care of the ocean environment through enriching online and in class activities. This lesson theoretically is to be done in two weeks, with week one activities to be done at home and in school and week two activities to be done the following week to end the lesson.
