The Standing Start

Introduction

A standing start is a fundamental, upright running technique used primarily in middle/long-distance races (800m+), youth athletics, or training, where the athlete stands behind the line with a staggered, forward-leaning stance. It involves a "set" position with weight on the front leg, followed by an explosive push-off upon the signal.

Task

Students will use online resources to learn about the standing start and its importance in track and field.

Students will state the varying coaching points associated with the standing start.

Students will be able to practice and demonstrate the standing start during class individually and collaboratively.

Process

Vocabulary Terms: Standing Start, Balance, Push Off, Posture

Students will watch teacher-created video which demonstrates and explain the correct techniques of the Standing Start, along with clear instructions on how to perform it properly.

  • Listen for the starter.
  • Move as soon as you hear the signal to go.
