Songs vs. Poems

Introduction

Today your group will be analyzing how songs are connected to poetry! Please open a Google Document and answer the following questions as a group: 

  • What is theme? 
  • Why is it important to understand the meanings of nonliteral language in a song?
Task

Once your group has finished listening to "Brave", please discuss the themes that are presented on the other document. 

 

Next please listen to Katy Perry's "Roar" with the link below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2f501YWxso

 

Once your group has finished listening to "Roar", please discuss the themes that are presented on the other document. 

 

Now your group will compare and contrast the themes that are presented within Sara Bareilles "Brave" and Katy Perry's "Roar" on the other document.

Now your group will read Edna St. Vincent Millay’s “The Courage That My Mother Had” and discuss what theme is presented within the poem on the Google document.

Evaluation

Using your discussions from the previous sections and the lyrics/poems, please complete the following Venn Diagram. This will compare themes that are presented in both and will have you answer which one your group prefers.

Conclusion

Since your group now realizes how poetry and songs are connected, please find a poem that matches your favorite song! Please bring the song lyrics and poem to tomorrows class to present. 

Just a reminder, the song and poem need to be school appropriate

  • The students will be assessed through a worksheet comparing Edna St. Vincent Millay’s “The Courage That My Mother Had” to “Mother to Son” by Langston Hughes and Sara Bareilles’ “Brave” to Katy Perry’s “Roar”. The worksheet contains questions of whether the students prefer songs or poems and the similarities between them.
  • The teacher will use the lyric YouTube videos of Sara Bareilles “Brave” and Katy Perry’s “Roar” so the students can listen to the song as well as viewing the lyrics with Think, Pair, Share.  
  • Students will use the Poem and Lyrics Graphic Organizer to compare Edna St. Vincent Millay’s “The Courage That My Mother Had” to “Mother to Son” by Langston Hughes and Sara Bareilles’ “Brave” to Katy Perry’s “Roar”. The worksheet will be printed out to be turned in so the students can work at their own pace.
  • By playing the lyrics YouTube video of Katy Perry’s “Roar” and Sara Bareilles “Brave” and having lyrics printed out for students, it accommodates to visual and auditory learners. Students who finish the assignment early can read their own book quietly.
