Skimming to Get the Main Idea(Manalo,NKE)

Introduction

William Godwin said, "He that loves reading has everything within his reach." But the truth is, not everyone is fond of reading. Some of us would prefer to watch television or listen to the radio for news instead of sitting over coffee reading the daily newspaper. Studies also show that the rate of Filipino children who spend their time reading has declined over the years (see https://news.mb.com.ph/2017/0723/book-reading-among-filipino-children-w…).

Although reading is not everyone's hobby, we cannot deny the fact that in our daily life , we use reading as a tool not just to attain information but also in the fields of communication, education ,etc. We read traffic and road signs, we read the contents of the food we eat, we read our conversations in texting apps and social media sites. In almost every aspect of our daily activity , we read. But sometimes when the texts are too many or too long, we often become lazy reading the whole material. Sometimes there is a trouble in determining which parts of a text are the most important and sometimes we wish  we could collect informations quicker and more efficiently. Regarding these problems, we could use one reading technique called SKIMMIMG.

Task

•Read through JOHN F. KENNEDY'S INAUGURAL ADDRESS.

•Form groups then accomplish the given activities by applying the skimming strategy.

•To assess acquired learning on the concept of skimming, each group will make a song.

Process

SKIMMING is a strategic, selective reading method in which we focus on the main ideas of a text. When skimming, deliberately skip text that provides details, stories, data or other elaboration.

Skimming methods:

1.Beginnings and Endings- reading the first and last sentences of the paragraph only.

2.Wheat vs. Chaff- reading the amount of text necessary.

3.Visual and Verbal clause- watching for signal words and phrases.

ACTIVITIES

1. The learners will read the text once (in 3-4 minutes).

2. The learners will form seven groups.

3. Working now as groups, the learners will skim through the material again to do the following:

     A. Give the main idea for each paragraph.

        1. Para.2

        2. Para.3

        3. Para.9

        4. Para.12

        5. Para. 15

        6. Para. 19

        7. Para 23

    B. What is the over-all message of the speech?

   C. What is the author's purpose in delivering the speech?

4. The groups will make a song about the concept and importance of skimming in their daily lives. (This activity will be given as an assignment)

Summary

Skimming is not just used in school. It is a very essential technique in many aspects of our life. But why do we really need to know how to skim ? Why is skimming important? In what instances do we use skimming? We skim when and because :

• we need the the "big picture" or main points - when reading, skimming serves as a form of previewing. Knowing when and how to skim will help us become a more efficient, strategic reader.

•to make the most of our time - sometimes, we dont have time to do everything. With skimming, we'll be able to cover vast amounts of material more quickly and save time for everything else that we have to do.
