Sexual Reproduction in Plants

Introduction

The Secret Life of Flowers: Sexual Reproduction in Plants

Plants may not move or speak, but they have a fascinating way of reproducing. In this WebQuest, you will become botany detectives exploring how flowering plants reproduce sexually. You will discover how flowers attract pollinators, how fertilization takes place, and how seeds are formed to grow the next generation of plants.

1. What is Sexual Reproduction in Plants?

Definition:

Sexual reproduction in plants is the process by which male and female reproductive cells (gametes) combine to form a new plant (offspring). It occurs mostly in flowering plants.

It involves:

  • Male gamete (pollen) from the anther

  • Female gamete (egg cell/ovule) from the ovary

🔹 2. Structure of a Flower (Reproductive Part of Plant)

A flower has four main parts:

Part Description Function
Sepals Green leaf-like structures Protect the flower bud
Petals Brightly colored parts Attract pollinators
Stamens (Male) Anther + Filament Produce pollen grains
Carpel/Pistil (Female) Stigma + Style + Ovary

Receives pollen, holds ovules

3. Pollination

Pollination: Transfer of pollen from anther to stigma.

Types of Pollination:

  • Self-Pollination: Pollen lands on the stigma of the same flower or same plant.

  • Cross-Pollination: Pollen is transferred to the stigma of a different plant of the same species.

Agents of Pollination:

  • Wind (e.g., grasses)

  • Insects (e.g., bees, butterflies)

  • Water (e.g., some aquatic plants)

  • Animals and birds

Activity Suggestion: Watch a video of bees pollinating flowers (YouTube link)

4. Fertilization

Fertilization:

After pollination, a pollen tube grows from the stigma to the ovary. The male gamete travels through the tube and fuses with the egg (ovule).

  • This fusion forms a zygote, which develops into an embryo.

5. Formation of Fruit and Seed

  • The ovary becomes the fruit.

  • The ovule becomes the seed.

  • The seed contains the embryo and food storage (cotyledons).

Examples:

  • Ovary of apple flower → Apple fruit

  • Ovule inside → Apple seed

6. Germination

Once the seed falls on suitable soil, with water, warmth, and air, it begins to germinate into a new plant.

Conditions required:

  • Water

  • Air (oxygen)

  • Right temperature

7. Importance of Sexual Reproduction in Plants

  • Creates genetic variation (important for evolution)

  • Helps plants adapt to different environments

  • Increases biodiversity

  • Ensures survival of species

Task

In groups of 3–4, you will research and design an e-booklet (using Google Slides, Canva, or PowerPoint) that includes:

  • Parts of a flower and their functions

  • Pollination – types and agents

  • Fertilization in flowering plants

  • Formation of fruits and seeds

  • The importance of sexual reproduction in biodiversity

Process

Conclusion

Conclusion – Sexual Reproduction in Plants

Through this WebQuest, you have explored the amazing journey of how flowering plants reproduce. From the colorful petals that attract pollinators, to the microscopic pollen grains that travel to the ovary, and finally the formation of fruits and seeds — you have learned how life continues in the plant kingdom.

Now you understand that:

  • Flowers are not just pretty — they are the reproductive organs of plants.

  • Pollination and fertilization are key steps in creating seeds.

  • Fruits and seeds help plants spread and grow in new places.

  • Sexual reproduction helps plants produce healthy and diverse offspring, which is important for biodiversity and our food supply.

🌱 Plants may be silent, but they have a secret life full of science and survival.
