Exploring STEM Careers

Introduction

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.  A STEM Career is any career that uses these areas of study.  Many STEM careers have not yet been invented.  Technology is changing so rapidly that we don't yet know what we will need to be able to do 20 years down the road.

Task

Your job is to explore several different STEM careers using the directions on the process page.  You will then choose a single career and do research to discover what you would be responsible for if you chose that career and what you will need to do in order to prepare yourself for that career.  Finally, in the evaluation, you will put together a presentation about the STEM career of your choice to share with the class.

Process

1. Watch this video about how technology can change lives.  Think about what science, technology, engineering, and math might be needed to invent this technology.

     a.  List one example for each letter of STEM that you observed in the video.

     b.  What are some other ways that technology driven by thought might change peoples live?

     c.  What might be some dangers of this technology?

2. Take a look at 3-4 different STEM careers that interests you from the following website.

3.  Choose 1 STEM career of particular interest and answer the following questions about your STEM Career of choice:

     a. Which part of STEM does this job address?

     b. Whats schools could you attend to get this degree?

     c. How many years of college are required?

     d. Where could you work in this job?

     e. How much money will you make?

     f.  What are some interesting things you learned about this career?

4.  Here are some websites to get you started with your research, feel free to do additional research to answer the above questions.

5. Once you have completed the above steps continue on to the Evaluation.

Evaluation

Now that you have chosen a STEM career you are interested in and done all the research to determine what path you will need to take to make this a reality, you need to present this information to the class.  You may chose from the following options for a presentation.  If you have an idea not on the list or would like to modify one on the list please discuss this with your teacher.

1. Working with your partner develop a short skit that contains all of the information on your research sheet.

2.  Write and perform an original song that tells all the information on your research sheet.

3.  Design a poster advertising for your selected STEM Career.  Include the information from your research sheet.

4.  Write, record and share a video commercial for your STEM Career.  Include research sheet information.

5.  Create and record a 30 second radio commercial. Include research information sheet.

6.  Develop another original way share your information. (this must be approved ahead of time)
