Introduction
Have you ever wondered why people act the way they do? Everyone has likely wondered this at some point. Psychology is the field that seeks to answer this question. Psychology is the study of behavior and mental processes.
There are a multitude of different theories posed by psychologists to understand behavior. In this lesson, we will focus on Cognitive Psychology, Behaviorism, and Social Cognitive Theory. Each theory has its proponents and opponents, with valid arguments for each.
Cognitive psychology focuses on the mental processes involved in learning. The emphasis is placed on brain functions, memory, and reasoning.
Behaviorism is concerned with observable patterns of behavior over time, rather than mental state. Behaviorism also aims to correct unwanted behavior, while reinforcing wanted behavior.
Social Cognitive Theory combines two aspects of learning to explain human behavior. Theorists believed in the power of others to teach and motivate, while simultaneously acknowledging the importance of self-regulation and self-motivation.
Task
Students will conduct research on cognitive theory, behaviorism, and social cognitive theory utilizing online resources and databases. Each student will choose one of the three theories that they believe has the most impact on educational psychology. They will then be tasked with convincing others of the merits of their theory.
Process
In either a Word document or on Canva, students will create a visually appealing, professional pamphlet/newsletter/poster for their chosen psychological theory.
The finished product will introduce the theory, introduce a theorist, list the main ideas of the theory, and provide the benefits and disadvantages of the theory in practice. Students should include at least 1 image in the finished product.
The assignment should be comprehensive and convincing. Write as if the person reading the material has never heard of your theory. The completed assignment will be submitted to Canvas.
Evaluation
Student work will be evaluated using the Psychological Theories rubric provided.
Completed assignments should demonstrate the following
- Understanding of behaviorism, cognitive psychology, and social cognitive theory
- Grade-level appropriate grammar and punctuation
- Professional and appealing visual elements
- At least 1 image
