Staying Active in the Great Depression

Introduction

During the Great Depression, families had very few resources. Children had to create their own games and activities using what they had.

Task
  1. Research games/activities from the 1930s
  2. Analyze how limited resources influenced play
  3. Create a simple game using minimal equipment
Process

Students work in small groups:

Step 1: Predict

  • What kinds of games do you think children played?

Step 2: Research 

  • Playground games from the 1930s
  • Homemade toys/games

Step 3: Question & Clarify

  • What materials were used?
  • Why were these games popular?

Step 4: Summarize

  • What did you learn about physical activity during this time?
Evaluation
  • Create a simple game using limited materials (cones, chalk)
  • Be ready to teach and explain your game

  • Participation (10 pts)

  • Creativity and teamwork(10 pts)
