All About Me and My Family!

Introduction

Welcome to our “All About Me and My Family” WebQuest!

In this activity, preschoolers will learn about their families, traditions, and what makes them unique. They’ll also explore the beautiful differences and similarities among their classmates. Through art, storytelling, music, and sharing, children will begin to understand that every family is special and that our cultures help shape who we are.

Task

By the end of this WebQuest, preschoolers (with the help of teachers and families) will:

  • Bring in or draw a picture of their family.

  • Share a family tradition, song, food, or celebration.

  • Create a page in the class “Our Families” book (digital or physical).

  • Participate in a class “Culture Celebration Day.”

These tasks help young learners build self-identity, understand cultural diversity, and feel a sense of belonging in the classroom.

Process

Step 1: Listen and Learn

Teachers will read books about family and diversity like:

  • The Family Book by Todd Parr

  • Whoever You Are by Mem Fox

  • All Are Welcome by Alexandra Penfold

Step 2: Draw or Share Your Family

Children will draw a picture of their family or bring in a photo from home.

Step 3: Our Traditions

Families will help their child share a favorite tradition, celebration, food, or song (verbally, with photos, or short video/audio recordings).

Step 4: Create a Page for the Class Book

Children will work with the teacher to make a page in the class “Our Families” book. It can include:

  • Their family picture

  • Their name and favorite family activity

  • A sentence or recording like “My family celebrates ___.”

Step 5: Culture Day

We’ll wrap up with a classroom celebration! Families can bring in food, music, or dress that represents their culture, and we’ll all share together.

Conclusion

Congratulations! You’ve helped your class learn more about each other’s families and cultures. We learned that families can be different in size, language, food, and traditions, but they all give us love and make us who we are. Let’s always celebrate our differences and keep learning together!

Teacher Page

This WebQuest is designed with preschool learners in mind and reflects Chisholm’s (1998) culturally supportive teaching elements:

  • Cultural Awareness: Children learn about each other’s families and cultures through art, stories, and celebration.

  • Cultural Relevance: Activities are based on the children’s real lives, traditions, and home experiences.

  • Culturally Supportive Environment: This project fosters a sense of belonging and appreciation for diversity.

  • Equitable Access: Children contribute through drawings, recordings, or family stories, allowing for various comfort levels and technology access.

  • Instructional Flexibility: Teachers can adapt the lesson for in-person, remote, or blended settings.

  • Instructional Integration: Technology is used to support learning; such as photos, audio, and class digital books, to enhance the experience.

This lesson increases cultural awareness in early learners while nurturing identity, inclusion, and respect.
