"Hello" Around our Classroom

Introduction

We have a very diverse class this year. Many of our students have parents or grandparents that grew up in a different culture. In order to  learn about our friends, we will learn how to say hello in languages that are culturally relevant to our classmates.

Task

We will go over the different ways that we can say hello that are connected to our classmates. We will practice as a group so that we can understand these greetings.

Process

First, we will say "hello" from the Philippines. Miss Michelle's grandfather was born and raised in the Philippines. He moved to America in his early 20's.

"KUMASTA" (koo-MOOS-tah)

Next, we will say "hello" from China. Abby's daddy was born in Hong Kong and has been in America for about 15 years now. They speak Mandarin in their home.

"NI-HAO" (nee haow)

Now we will say "hello" from Russia. Henry's mom was born in Russia, and they speak Russian in their home.

"PRIVYET" (pree-vyet)

We have one more "hello". This one is from France. Sebastian's great grandfather was born in France. Sometimes, they celebrate French culture in their home.

"BONJOUR" (bon-jour)

Evaluation

Students will be "evaluated' by practicing greetings with myself and their classmates.

Conclusion

There are many ways to say 'hello" around the world. This webquest allows us to learn the various 'hellos" that are culturally relevant to our class.

Teacher Page

My WebQuest is culturally supportive and culturally relevant as it embraces a small piece of my student's backgrounds and shares it with the class. It allows my students to feel seen and understood from a cultural standpoint and teaches the other children about diversity.
