Celebrating Cultural Festivals Around the World !

Introduction

Festivals are powerful expressions of culture,identity,and tradtion.Around the world,communities celebrate in different unique and colorful ways. In this WebQuest, you will explore a cultural festival from a region different than your own, and uncover its history and significance, and share what you've learned through a multimedia project.

Task

You will:

  1. Research a cultural festival from another country or cultural group.

  2. Discover its origins, customs, food, clothing, music, and values.

  3. Create a multimedia presentation to teach others about the festival.

  4. Reflect on what this festival reveals about the culture and community that celebrates it.

Process
  • Form Groups: Work in teams of 3–4. Try to have diversity in your group.

  • Choose a Festival: Select a cultural festival from a curated list or propose your own (with teacher approval). Examples include:

    • Diwali (India)

    • Obon (Japan)

    • Carnival (Brazil)

    • Eid al-Fitr (various Muslim countries)

    • Día de los Muertos (Mexico)

    • Songkran (Thailand)

  • Research:

    • Use at least 3 reliable sources.

    • Investigate: historical origins, meaning, customs, food, music, and community involvement.

  • Create a Presentation:

    • Format: video, slideshow, podcast, or digital poster.

    • Include culturally relevant visuals and sounds.

    • Feature greetings or phrases in the native language (with translations).

  • Present to the Class:

    • Share your project and explain the significance of the festival.

    • Highlight what your group found most interesting or surprising.

  • Reflect: Write a short reflection on what you learned and how it changed or expanded your perspective.
