Our Class Culture Quilt

Introduction

Today, we are going on an adventure to learn about what makes us unique and wonderful.  Everyone comes from a family with their traditions, whether it's special foods, holidays, or unique ways of celebrating.  These traditions are a part of our culture, and culture tells the story of who we are.

In this project, you will explore your culture by speaking with your family and thinking about what makes your home special. Then, you will create a quilt square that shows something important about your culture.  When we put all the squares together, we will make one big, beautiful class culture quilt that celebrates everyone's story.

As we learn about each other, we'll discover all the amazing ways we are different—and all the ways we are the same.

Task

Making our Class Culture Quilt!

1. Create one quilt square that shows something about your culture or family (like a favorite food or something you all do together).

2. Share your quilt with the class.

3. Help put all the squares together to make a big class "Culture Quilt."

4. When we are finished, we will display the quilt so everyone can see the special stories we created.

Process

Let's explore our world!

We will read the story, We're Different, We're the Same.

Students will watch this video to learn about different cultures.

Students will ask their parents to answer the following question.

  • Where were we born?
  • What special foods do we eat?
  • What languages do we speak?
  • What holiday do we celebrate?
  • Do we wear special clothes to celebrate?

Students will use paint, crayons, or markers to draw and decorate their quilt square.

Please share with the class about your square. What did you choose and why?

Evaluation

The teacher will place a check mark next to each completed item.

I made a quilt square.
I talked about something special from my culture.
I listened to my friend's stories.
I was kind and respectful.
I learned about someone else's culture.

Conclusion

Our class, "Culture Quilt," is complete. You have explored your culture, created a beautiful quilt square, and shared something special about who you are.

Now, when we look at our class Culture Quilt, we see more than drawings; we see our stories, our families, and all the things that make us unique and unforgettable.  Just like every square is different, every person in our class is different, and that's what makes our quilt so wonderful.

Our quilt shows that even though we come from many places, we can all work, play, and get along together. Let's continue learning about each other, being kind, and celebrating the things that make us, US!

We will invite your parents and have a Quilt Celebration Day!

This lesson is culturally relevant because it asks students to reflect on their cultural practices, including food, language, and traditions.  These elements come from the child's life, making the activity meaningful and relevant to them.  The quilt squares encourage family involvement, fostering a connection between school and home.  This activity allows the children to create something that represents who they are. The students can gain confidence and a sense of belonging. It will also help children discover their identity and celebrate it.

As children share their quilt squares, they see and hear about cultures they may not be aware of.  This builds curiosity, empathy, and respect for other backgrounds. The completed project, "Our Class Cultural Quilt," is a visible display that can be hung in the classroom to represent the Quilt Celebration, Multicultural Day, and Heritage Day.
