Exploring Ecosystems: A Virtual Field Trip

Introduction

Welcome, young ecologists! 🌿

Have you ever wondered what makes a rainforest different from a desert? Or how animals and plants survive in extreme environments? In this WebQuest, you’ll become an ecosystem explorer and discover how living and non-living things interact in different environments around the world. Ready to travel the planet from your screen?

Task

Your mission is to create a digital field guide about an ecosystem of your choice (e.g., rainforest, desert, tundra, ocean, grassland). This field guide will include information about:

  • The location and climate of the ecosystem

  • Common plants and animals

  • Food chains and webs

  • Environmental threats and how we can help

You’ll work in teams of 3–4 and present your guide using Google Slides or PowerPoint. Be creative—add pictures, fun facts, and even a quiz at the end!

Process

Follow these steps to complete your WebQuest:

Step 1: Choose your ecosystem

Your group will pick one of the following:

  • Rainforest

  • Desert

  • Ocean

  • Tundra

  • Grassland

Step 2: Research

Use the resources provided below to gather information on:

  • Climate and geography

  • Plant and animal life

  • Food chains/webs

  • Environmental challenges

  • Conservation efforts

Step 3: Create your field guide

Use Google Slides or PowerPoint. Include:

  • A cover page with your ecosystem name

  • 5–7 slides with researched information

  • 1 slide with your own quiz or fun fact section

Step 4: Present

Each group will present their guide to the class. Be ready to answer questions from your classmates!

Evaluation
Criteria Excellent (4) Good (3) Fair (2) Needs Improvement (1)
Content Accuracy Information is detailed and accurate Most information is accurate Some facts are incorrect Many errors present
Organization Slides are well-organized and easy to follow Mostly organized Somewhat confusing Disorganized
Creativity & Design Visually engaging and creative Good effort shown Minimal creativity Lacks design effort
Teamwork Everyone contributed equally Most team members helped Unequal effort One person did most work
Presentation Skills Clear, confident, and well-rehearsed Mostly clear and practiced Some difficulty presenting Mumbled or read from slides

Conclusion

Congratulations, ecosystem explorers! You’ve completed your virtual field trip and created a field guide to help others understand how nature works. Along the way, you learned how living things depend on each other and the environment—and why it's important to protect our planet. 🌎

Take a moment to reflect: What surprised you? What was your favorite ecosystem and why? What can we do to take care of these amazing places?
