Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Introduction

Why do we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day? Why is he an important historical figure? What is his message?

 

Learning objectives:

1. Identify who Martin Luther King is, what is his message and why is he an important historical figure

2. Understand the concepts that MLK used including fairness, kindness and equality

3. Present key facts about Martin Luther's Legacy using age-appropriate vocab

4. Associate what peaceful problem-solving looks like

5. Determine that all people should be treated with respect no matter their differences

6. Create an illustration and paragraph describing how you use Dr. King's message in your school or home

Task

You will be creating a team name with your teammates and a personal illustration showing how you use Dr. King's message in school or at home and writing a paragraph describing your illustration! Be kind and fair to each other!

 

 

Alert!!

I want to hang your illustrations up on our bulletin board, so we could show other classes how we kindness fairness and equality! Just like Martin Luther king!

 

Process

1. I will randomly put you in groups of three or four.

2. Get into your groups and go on Team Name Generator to create a team name with your team members by choosing color, adjectives, a place, animals and a group of people as it says on the website.

Let's practice fairness and kindness with each other!! By allowing everyone a chance to give an idea for each category and work together to come up with a team name!

3. Choose a team leader, this person will present in the end.

2. Once team name is generated and team leader is chosen each member must grab art tools needed:

Markers, Crayons, Colored pencils

Don't forget your pencil!!

3. Grab draw and write paper.

5. Get into your groups with your supplies.

6. Go on martin luther king for first graders omf - Google Search and listen to the story about Martin Luther King!! And then each person in the group will start their illustrations and write their paragraphs describing their illustrations.

7. Once complete, each team member should have a time to talk about their illustration and paragraph describing their creation to the group and how they use Dr. King's message in school or at home. 

 Let's be kind and give team members room explain!

8. At the end of the activity, I will call each team randomly by their team name and each team leader must talk about their illustration to the class.

Conclusion

This Web Quest helps first grade students understand who Martin Luther King is and why he is an important historical figure. The project helps students describe how they use Dr. King's message in their school or home. Helping them think critically and apply what they learned by providing real life examples as well as working with others to practice fairness, kindness and equality.
