Navigating the Digital World: The Impact of Social Media on Teenagers

Introduction

Hey there!  We all use social media, but have you ever stopped to think about its real impact on our lives, especially for teenagers? This WebQuest will help you explore the positive and negative effects of social media on teens, examining its influence on mental health, relationships, and self-esteem. Get ready to dive into research and share your findings!

Task

Your task is to create a persuasive presentation arguing either for or against increased regulation of social media for teenagers. Your presentation should include:

- A clear statement of your position (for or against increased regulation).

- At least three supporting arguments with evidence from your research.

- Consideration of counterarguments and rebuttals.

- A visually appealing presentation format (e.g., PowerPoint, Google Slides, Prezi).

- A concise summary of your findings and a call to action.

Process

1. Choose a Side: Decide whether you will argue for or against increased social media regulation for teenagers.

2. Research: Use the provided resources (and any others you find with teacher approval) to gather information supporting your position.  Focus on finding credible sources like academic journals, reputable news articles, and government reports.  Take notes and cite your sources properly.

3. Develop Arguments:  Craft at least three strong arguments to support your chosen position.  For each argument, find evidence from your research to back it up.

4. Address Counterarguments:  Identify potential counterarguments to your position and develop rebuttals to address them.

5. Create your Presentation: Design a visually engaging presentation that clearly communicates your arguments and evidence.

6. Refine and Rehearse:  Practice presenting your work to ensure you can deliver it confidently and clearly.

Evaluation

Your presentation will be assessed based on several key criteria.  An excellent presentation (4 points) will demonstrate a clearly stated position, three or more strong and well-supported arguments, compelling evidence from reliable sources, a thorough addressing of counterarguments, and a visually appealing and well-organized presentation. A good presentation (3 points) will meet most of these criteria, perhaps with minor weaknesses in one or two areas. A fair presentation (2 points) will show some understanding but will have significant weaknesses in several areas. A poor presentation (1 point) will demonstrate a lack of understanding of the topic and will not meet the requirements of the assignment.

Conclusion

Congratulations on completing your WebQuest! By researching and presenting your findings, you've gained a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between social media and teenagers. Consider how this knowledge might influence your own use of social media and your interactions with others online.  Remember to be mindful and responsible in your digital interactions!
