Phoneme Manipulation

Introduction

Kindergarten (40-60 min)

"Have you ever played with building blocks? What if we could build words the same way — just by changing one little letter at a time? Let's find out how!"

Task

Today, we are going to learn how changing just one letter in a word can make a brand-new word! This is an important skill called phoneme manipulation that helps us become stronger readers and writers. You will get to watch a fun video, use a special online word machine, and build your own word chains with your classmates.

Our goal is to understand that when we change, add, or take away a letter, it creates a different word. This will help you recognize patterns in words, which is an important part of becoming a good reader, just like the Texas TEKS standard K2B(iii) says!

Process

1. You will watch a teacher-assigned phonics video on CVC word changes.

2. You will open the digital word builder tool (https://www.starfall.com/h/word-machines/)

3. You will complete at least three word chains using the tool (document them on your worksheet).

4. You will fill out the drag-and-drop worksheet by moving letters to form new words.
