Mixtures of water resources

Introduction

Today we will learn the importance of water pollution! Do you know what water pollution is? Come and find out grade 6!

Task

At the end of this lesson, learners will be able to answer the following questions:

1. What is water pollution?

2. What are the causes of water pollution?

3. Water pollution caused by soluble substances.

4. Water pollution caused by insoluble substances.

5. Water pollution caused by living germs.

Process

Learners must read use the following information to answer the questions that follows:

- Water pollution is caused by the actions of people who make water dirty and unsafe for living things.

- Water can be polluted by:

- Insoluble substances such as oil and plastic.

- Soluble substances such as soap and fertilizer.

- Living germs (germs and toilet waste).

- Soluble substances such as soap, poisons (insecticides), fertilizers, pesticides, acids and toxic chemicals dissolve in           the water and pollute it.

- We often cannot see these substances in the water and then we do not know that the water is polluted.

- Fertilizers and soaps reduce the oxygen levels in the water.

Many organisms in the polluted water cannot get enough oxygen and die.

- Metals and dissolved chemicals, such as acids from factories, can pollute rivers and lakes because they are toxic.

- Mining waste and paint contain lead. Drinking water with lead can seriously damage the brain and kidneys.

- Farmers spray their crops with insecticides. The insecticides can contaminate animals in the water.

- Insoluble substances and materials that cause water pollution include oil, plastic, and toilet waste.

- These substances can harm living things in the water and also harm the people and animals that drink the water.

- Oil spills from ships pollute the sea and harm marine life.

The oil does not wash off the birds' feathers. They cannot fly with oil on their wings and cannot spread their wings to dry.

- Sea turtles die when they eat plastic bags. Animals like seals and penguins get entangled in fishing line, which can kill them      or cause injury.

- People pollute water when they use rivers or streams as a toilet.

- Germs in the water cause diseases such as cholera and diarrhea. People can die from these diseases.

- When your stomach is working and your stools are loose and watery, you have diarrhea.

- Cholera is a much more serious type of diarrhea.

It is caused by a type of germ that is mainly found in water contaminated with feces.
