Introduction
Have you ever wondered where dreams end and reality begins?
Step into the surreal universe of Salvador Dali — a world filled with melting clocks, floating objects, and puzzling symbolism.
In this web-quest, you’ll explore what Dali was really trying to tell us through his art and imagine how his unique vision would look in today’s digital world. Your mission is to become modern interpreters of Dali’s legacy: create, analyze, and express. Through creative projects like blogs, virtual galleries, and short videos, you’ll uncover the deeper meanings behind his masterpieces and bring his voice into the 21st century.
Get ready to think, feel, and create like never before.

Task

Your group will consist of four students. Each member will take on a unique creative role inspired by Salvador Dali's surreal world:
-
Art Time Traveler – explores how Dali’s style could look in the 21st century; collects modern-day inspirations (e.g. AI, pop culture, fashion).
-
Symbol Decoder – analyzes the symbols and meanings in Dali’s artworks; explains what emotions or messages they may carry.
-
Virtual Curator – designs a digital gallery or presentation of the group’s work; adds audio or visual commentary to each piece.
-
Dali’s Voice – creates modern messages from Dali's point of view through memes, posters, or a short video (like TikTok) answering “What would Dali say today?”
Together, your group will produce one or more of the following creative products:
-
A blog or video diary showing “Dali in the 21st century”
-
A virtual art gallery with student-made artworks and audio comments
-
A meme, poster, or short video reflecting Dali’s modern voice
Your goal is to blend imagination with knowledge about Dali, express your ideas visually and emotionally, and reflect on where reality ends and dreams begin.

Painting: The Discovery of America by Christopher Columbus Dali, S. (1959). [Painting]. WikiArt. https://www.wikiart.org/en/salvador-dali/the-discovery-of-america-by-christopher-columbus-1959
What I see:
At first glance, it looks like a scene from a history book, but with a surreal twist. Columbus is there, looking more like a symbol than a real person. He’s holding a huge flag, and there are dream-like elements around him — broken spears, floating figures, and what seems like religious symbols. You can tell it’s not meant to show facts — it’s about a feeling, or maybe a message.
How it connects to today:
In today’s world we question a lot of historical "heroes" and events. This painting kind of does the same — it doesn’t show Columbus as a strong explorer, but more like someone caught in a storm of beliefs, myths, and expectations. With all the debates today about colonization, identity, and whose stories get told, this painting feels strangely relevant. It’s like Dali is asking: “What are we really discovering? And who decides what counts as truth?”
What it makes me think:
It reminds me that history isn’t just about facts — it’s about how we interpret those facts. And just like today, people in power often shape the story. Maybe this painting is less about Columbus and more about how we build meaning around events — using art, faith, nationalism, and imagination.
