A lesson on the solar system for my 3rd grade class

Introduction

Guided Questions

1. What are the eight planets in our solar system?

2. How do the planets differ from one another?

3. What is the Sun's role in our solar system?

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify and describe the planets in our solar system.
  • Compare and contrast characteristics of the planets.
  • Explain the importance of the Sun.

Florida’s B.E.S.T. Standards:

  • SC.3.E.5.3: Recognize that the Sun appears large and bright because it is the closest star to Earth.
  • SC.3.E.5.4: Explore the Law of Gravity by recognizing that every object pulls on every other object and that the force of gravity pulls objects toward the Earth.
  • SC.3.N.1.1: Raise questions about the natural world, investigate them in teams through free exploration and systematic investigations, and generate appropriate explanations based on those explorations.
Task

Students will create a narrated PowerPoint presentation on the Solar System. Each group will:

1. Research all eight planets and the Sun.

2. Describe each planet’s characteristics (size, distance from the Sun, surface, temperature, and fun facts).

3. Explain the importance of the Sun.

4. Compare at least two planets based on their characteristics.

5. Record audio narration to present their findings.

6. Share the presentation with the class.

Process

Group Roles:

  • Researcher: Finds reliable information on assigned planets.
  • Writer: Summarizes key points in student-friendly language.
  • Designer: Creates slides using images and bullet points.
  • Narrator: Records the audio for the presentation.

Steps:

1. Form Groups of 4.

2. Assign Roles.

3. Research using provided internet links.

4. Create slides with the required content.

5. Record Narration.

6. Submit Presentation.

Evaluation
Rubric
Criteria 4- Excellent  3-Good 2-Fair 1- Needs Improvement
Content Accuracy  All facts accurate and detailed Most facts accurate Some inaccuracies Many inaccuracies
Slide Design and Organization Clear, creative, well-organized Organized but lacks creativity Some slides confusing Poorly organized
Team Collaboration  All members contribute equally Most members contribute Uneven contributions Little teamwork
Narration Quality Clear, fluent, engaging Clear but choppy Difficult to follow Not understandable
Comparison Slide Detailed and accurate Accurate but brief Vague comparison  Missing or inaccurate information

Conclusion

In this WebQuest, you explored the solar system by researching planets, discovering fun facts, and learning the Sun’s important role. Working as a team, you created a narrated presentation to share your discoveries. you built research, collaboration, and presentation skills while traveling through space from Mercury to Neptune.
