CAUSES OF WORLD WAR 1 YEAR 9 HUMANITIES

Introduction

As young historians for the future, it is crucial to develop historical skills and knowledge and understanding of historical events. One of the ways we do this is through analysing primary and secondary sources.

A hundred years might seem like a very long time ago, but it isn't really. Your great-great grandparents were around then and they would have lived through , and maybe even taken part in this terrible conflict. World War 1 also knows as the Great War. Began in 1914 and had been anticipated to be over in a matter of months.....it did not end until 1918.

You will work in groups to analyse the causes of World War 1. Each group will be assigned 1 cause from the list below:

1. Mutual defence alliances

2. Imperialism

3. Militarism

4. Nationalism

5. Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand

Each group will look at the important factors of the cause of World War 1, the reasons that contributed to the cause of World War 1 and the role the cause played in creating World War 1.

Each group will then use the information found to create a "prezi" of there cause of World War 1 to be presented to the class.

After viewing the prezi's on the causes of World War 1,each student will write a short hypothesis statement detailing what the main cause for World War 1 was and why.

Task

Imagine you have a time machine and can travel back in time. Your job is to determine what was the main case of World War 1 and how it could have been prevented. Your task is to work together with other members of your group to analyse 1 cause of World War 1 to determine if it could have been prevented.  Each group will create a prezi which will inform the class on the factors that contributed to the cause of World War 1.  Your prezi should answer the following focus questions:

  1. What are the important factors that contributed to this cause?
  2. What role did this cause play in the history of World War 1?
  3. What were the reasons for this cause in creating World War 1?

This webquest will provide you with access to primary and secondary sources of information to guide your research. The focus questions will help create an in depth analysis of the causes of World War 1 in an engaging prezi. You will have 2 x 70 minute lessons to analyse the research and create your prezi's. On completion of viewing the prezi's students will individually create a hypothesis statement outlining the main cause of World War 1.

Process

Each group is to analyse a range of primary and secondary sources for information regarding their assigned cause of World War 1. The group is to use these sources to answer focus questions to create an in depth understanding of the cause. The group will then create an engaging prezi informing the class of the cause of World War 1.

STEP 1

The class will be split into 5 groups of 5-6 students and assigned 1 of the causes of World War 1 from the list below:

1. Mutual defence alliances

2. Imperialism

3. Militarism

4. Nationalism

5. Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand

STEP 2

Your group is to use the internet to gather information to answer the following questions about your assigned cause of World War 1: (Remember the importance of creditable websites when conducting your research). Here are some links to get you started:

https://www.historyonthenet.com/world-war-one-causes-2/

https://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/world-war-one/causes-of-world-war-one/causes-of-world-war-one/

  1. Describe the cause
  2. Who was impacted by this cause?
  3. Why was this a cause of World War 1?
  4. How did society play a role in the cause?
  5. How did governments play a role in the cause?
  6. What was the political climate at the time of the cause?
  7. Gather images to represent the cause

Organise this information into a popplet by following the link: http://popplet.com/ each group must upload their completed popplet's or a link to them in the collaboration space of OneNote.

STEP 3

Each group will be guided by the same 3 focus questions:

  1. What are the important factors that contributed to this cause?
  2. What role did this cause play in the history of World War 1?
  3. What were the reasons for this cause in creating World War 1?

These focus questions are designed for each group to develop an in depth understanding of their assigned cause of World War 1.

Each cause is listed below with a selection of links to creditable resources. Each group is to use the information gathered from these sources to add depth and show a higher level of thinking when analysing sources for information.

STEP 4

In your groups of 5-6 use the information you have gathered to create a prezi that addresses the focus questions for the cause of World War 1.

Use the link to take yo to the prezi website and start creating

These prezi's will be uploaded to OneNote collaboration space via link. Your prezi should be informative and engaging and should include answer to focus questions and other relevant information found during research. You may like to include your popplet in your prezi.

STEP 5

As a class group we will watch all prezi's and make a judgment based on the information provided. The judgement you need to make is which of the causes was the most significant in the history of World War 1.

You will individually write a hypothesis statement which discusses which cause was the most significant and how it could have been prevented.

RATIONALE:

This webquest is designed to develop student’s skills in inquiry- based learning through the use of ICT. It has been developed for year 9 humanities unit World War 1. Students use ICT in processes of inquiry and research. They identify information and data needs and plan actions to locate, access and retrieve information and data. Students organise, manipulate, structure and refine information to improve their interpretations and construct new understandings. They acknowledge and use information and data from a variety of sources and critically assess their quality.

Inquiry-based learning encourages a student centred approach to their learning by supporting underlying educational pedagogy such as Piaget’s constructivist theory. Humanities requires students show knowledge and understanding and historical skills. The advantages of using ICT’s in humanities are that it develops a student centred approach to their learning. Using ICT’s enhances students opportunities to research and show their knowledge and understanding in a range of engaging ways by encouraging a higher level of thinking when analysing primary and secondary sources. This webquest will allow students to develop their historical skills through the analysis of a range of primary and secondary sources. They will show their understanding by using ICT’s to create a prezi to educate and inform the class, further developing their higher level of thinking.

It is critical that we create an environment that facilitates abstract thinking at a higher level. The most effective way of achieving this is through the integration of ICT’s into the classroom.  Students need the opportunity to take control of their own learning and use their questioning skills to guide them through this process. This webquest gives students an opportunity to engage with the three parts of ICT from the curriculum, which include: investigating with ICT, communicating with ICT and creating with ICT. The aspects of this webquest allow students to successfully engage in all 3 of these areas.
