Sherman's March to the Sea

Introduction

Elaina Duvall Collen TereniakSS5H1 The student will explain the causes, major events, and consequences of the Civil War. c. Identify major battles and campaigns: Fort Sumter, Gettysburg, the Atlanta Campaign, Sherman’s March to the Sea, and Appomattox Court House. 

  • Essiential Question: What was the idea behind "Total War" strategy?
  • Brainstorm on your own what you think "Total War" means and how it is represented in this picture.
  • Keep in mind the devastation that took place after Sherman's March to the Sea. Think about all the families, children, homes and towns that were ruined.

Task
  • In groups of four, research one of the major campaigns of Shermans March using the www.history.com/interactives/shermans-march as your resource. Once you have selected a campaign, choose 3 battles that occured for that campaign. Tell where these battles took place, the date, outcomes and how they helped him move forward. Also make notes of how you think the people whose homes were destoryed felt. How the soldiers felt about their acts and even the thoughts of Sherman. Record these findings in a Prezi or  PowerPoint with your team to display at the end of the week.

Process

It's Your Turn!

You are in groups of 4. Each member needs to choice what role they will take on to make the preoject less stressful. Note: All roles include researching for the necessary information.

1. Team Captian: This role is to make sure everyone is on task, everything is turned in on time and work is completed correctly. This students also will assist in looking for reseach/information. 

2. Scribe: This role is going to be the writer. Your responsibilites are to write down all the necessary information and also, assist in the research process.

3. Technology Guru: You are in charge of putting together the Prezi or PowerPoint Presentation. You will gather all the information on your 3 battles and turn it into a visual masterpiece! 

4. Organize/Checker: Your role is to make sure all infomation is in a well-organized manner and that grammer/spelling is correct. 

Next: 

Slect one of the three major campaigns. Then, choose 2 battles that you are going to research. 

Make sure your presentation includes the following for each battle:

1. Brief time line that includes start/end and major events within the battle.

2. Death toll (how many people were killed?)

3. Where did this battle take place?

4. Outcome (Did "Sherman" take over this area?

5. How is this battle an example of Total War?

**Be sure to include pictures or videos 

Evaluation

After everyone presents their battles, students will write  2 paragraphs about what they learned about Sherman's March to the Sea, how/why it's an example of total war and how they feel about the devastation/effect of Sherman's March to the Sea.

Conclusion
  • Remember the essential question:What was the idea behind "Total War" strategy?
  • Talk with your group and have one answer to give to the class. Go back to your journal where you answered the question before and see how it compares.
