Exercise in the Classroom

Introduction

How long have you been sitting there?

Come on! Get up!

Task

Today we are going to exericise inside the classroom!

Your teacher will do one or more of the following:

1. play a game that gets you moving

2. show an exercise video that has you participate - not just sit and watch

3. have a dance party that requires many moves

Process

How can we choose which one to do?

Step 1 - Decide what are you in the mood to do?

Step 2 - Make a classroom vote

Step 3 - Based on the outcome

Choose a game - Twister, Cat in the Hat I can do That!, or Simon Says

Choose a video

Choose a song to dance to

The Elmo Slide, The Cha-Cha Slide, or Cupid Shuffle

Evaluation

Do students partake in the movement activity?

The teacher will determine how the student should participate based on student's ability to complete the activities for Exercise in the Classroom. Use the following grade scale to score how the student did.

4= great: student participated to his/her ability

3= good: student participated in most of the activity

2= okay: student participated in some or little of the activity

1= needs improvement: student did not participate or required many prompts to keep engaged

Conclusion

Don't you feel better now?

I hope you had fun moving in class with these activities.

Remember, you need to move every 20 minutes to keep your mind working well.

Ask for a break if we are not moving together as a class.

You can use these at home too!

Remember to get up at least every 20 minutes in the day. Moving around often helps students remain more focused. Offer a variety of movement choices to keep students engaged. You may need to modify or make accommadations for students with special needs.
